June Branch Meeting

  • The Wellington Club 88 The Terrace Wellington, Wellington, 6011 New Zealand (map)

Dr. Thomas Butchard

Antithombotics and Dentistry:

Increasing numbers of patients in general dental practice are taking one or more antithrombotic medications. This increases the complexity of safely providing treatment.

Dentists need to have a clear plan to manage patients taking these medicines. This will reduce stress for the clinician (plus patient!) and prevent unnecessary referrals.

This presentation focuses on ways a clinician can quickly:

  • Recognise the potential risk of post procedure bleeding from different antithrombotics and understand practical ways to minimise it.

  • Assess planned dentistry (extraction, biopsy, etc) to identify its bleeding risk before the procedure starts.

Thomas (Tom) is a Senior Dental Officer for Te Whatu Ora Te Toka Tumai Auckland.

He is a graduate of the University of Otago and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

His case load is the general dental care of medically complex patients, and minor oral surgery including treatment under general anaesthesia.

Prior to hospital practice he has worked in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. This included time as a house surgeon in maxillofacial surgery, and work in community and private dental clinics.
