Dr. Soo-Wee Ong
Dr Soo-Wee Ong is a specialist oral surgeon in full-time private practice in Dunedin, New Zealand. Since completing his specialist training in 2017, he has been passionate about bridging the gap between general dentistry and specialist care. With nearly a decade of experience in private general dental practice in Australia prior to specialising, Soo-Wee brings a unique perspective, having delivered oral surgical treatments in both general and specialist settings.
In 2022, he founded Origin Education—a platform dedicated to providing practical oral surgery training for dentists, with a focus on surgical extractions and implantology. His vision is to make oral surgery more accessible, efficient, and safe, empowering general dentists to confidently apply surgical skills in real-world clinical practice.
Have you ever asked yourself…
I want to do third molar surgery but I just don’t know where to start?
Why the heck did I start this case and ontly to regret it immediately?
When do I need a CBCT?
How do I get started with implants? There's too much information!
Do I always have to graft? It sounds so complex!
How do I pick the right cases? So I start my surgical journey properly?
If this sounds like you, come along to this study day where I will share my experiences with you on third molar surgery and dental implants. There's a lot of noise out there, with CPD courses all over the place, so I can understand why it may feel absolutely daunting and confusing!
I take a very practical, real-world approach to my teaching and I promise you, you will leave the day re-energise about oral surgery and perhaps even loving it!
Goals for the day:
Assessment, assessment & assessment; Pick the right cases to increase your confidence
OPG V CBCT; When and how to read it. ITS MORE THAN JUST THE NERVE!
Surgical planning; The most important part. Develop and have a plan, so you don’t get stressed half way through.
Armamentarium; Why and how to use it properly
Bone gutter; remove bone in the right places and know how much to remove
Sectioning; the hardest part to get right. But there’s a strategy to ensure you don’t put yourself 2 steps back
Plan your implant right from the start - reduce prosthetic stress (Equally important even if you don't place!)
Tips on how to avoid grafting but still get the best result for your patients
Please note: There is no hands-on practical component to this day
