Digital trends in dentistry-beyond the hype, hallow and hullabaloo

Current developments in the technological space are redefining how dentistry is being practiced. No branch of dentistry seems immune to this technological tsunami. Digital is not just the new mantra but it is a totally different approach to our  traditional workflows, ALL apparently with an intention to bring predictability, efficiency and accuracy to what we do. Is that true though? Should you care? What pieces of equipment matter? What should you invest in? What changes are worth making to your workflows? What tangible effect will you actually experience? Come and get answers to these and many more questions as we explore the options that exist. We will talk about intraoral scanners, face scanners, CBCTs, software, guided surgery, 3D printing, milling, photogrammetry, artificial intelligence and augmented reality. Take away practical tips and honest, uninfluenced, non commercial opinions garnered from years of experience and real science.

Dr Nitish Surathu is a former Associate Professor of Periodontics who currently practices in New Zealand as a general dentist. He completed his BDS in 1991 and went on to complete a MDS in Periodontics in 1994. He is, by examination, an accredited Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and a Fellow and Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He has lectured around the world on periodontics and dental implants and continues to be actively involved with podium lectures, hands on and clinical courses. Dr Surathu served on the Executive Council of the Asian Pacific Society of Periodontology for over a decade and is currently an Affiliate Faculty with the Department of Periodontics at Nova Southeastern University's College of Dental Medicine in the USA and a Director with The ACE Institute. He has also published extensively in peer reviewed journals and other publications and is actively involved in the evaluation of new generation digital technologies in intraoral scanning, CAD software in dentistry, CAM milling technologies, 3D printing, guided implant surgery and relevant materials.

Dr Neeraj Surathu completed his BDS in 2019 and worked in a dental practice in New Zealand thereafter. His involvement with digital laboratory workflows during this time saw him develop a keen interest in Prosthodontics. He subsequently completed a Certificate Program in Prosthodontics and also obtained a Master of Science degree from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. He then chose to return to New Zealand and is now a Specialist Prosthodontist practicing in Hamilton. Besides being a licensed practitioner in the USA as well, he is actively involved in  laboratory research in biomaterials in the digital dental space at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  Dr Surathu has published extensively in online articles, dental periodicals and peer-reviewed journals, besides making multiple presentations on lectures and courses in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. He has a keen interest in all things dental and digital that has now led to a pursuit of techniques for digitisation of modern prosthodontic workflows.
